Originally conceived as a house for ‘Hurricane country’ in Florida USA, the A-Frame construction provides a very stable structure in high winds. The elevated living in ‘air-space’ also allows compact ‘arrivals’ and social areas underneath the house with car parking , boat mooring or even jetty ‘arrivals’ all concentrated here. In hot climates the overhang provides cooler shaded entrances, social spaces and non-overheated ‘hot-to-touch’ car parking. In colder climates the further advantage would be elevated living from extreme snow drift conditions. In flood zones, the raised main body of the house would be removed from flooding altogether with the possibility of higher specification marine hatch doors.
To maximise views the house is elevated above ground level and is connected to the earth by a central structural A-frame ‘Core & Legs’.
The flush angled façade reduces building mass, head-on turbulence, internal reflections and allows for clear upward sky views from inside out, giving the house a strong dynamic aeronautical form. The external skin is a sleek integrated façade with few protruding elements, only ‘shut-lines’ between material junctions are seen, similar to those on a modern car with glass and metal interfaces flush around the cars fluid bodywork.
